Driving Innovation in Automotive Leak Testing and Coatings with Key High Performance Series Valves

High vacuum technology plays a crucial but often unseen role in the automotive industry, particularly in leak testing and coatings. Originally developed for the Manhattan Project, high vacuum mass spectrometer leak testing is now used to test critical automotive components like airbags, fuel tanks, radiators, and batteries to ensure safety and reliability. Additionally, high vacuum coatings serve both decorative and functional purposes, such as reflective coatings for headlights and shield coatings for electric vehicle batteries, providing protection against wear, corrosion, and environmental factors. Key High Vacuum Products contributes to the industry with its Performance Series valves, known for their durability, corrosion resistance, and compact design, supporting the growing demand for quality and efficiency in automotive manufacturing.

High vacuum technology touches our lives daily in so many ways, most of us don’t even realize it. One of the best examples of how high vacuum is a part of our daily life is the automobile.

High vacuum technology has historically been used primarily for two purposes within the automotive industry; critical leak testing and coatings. Presently the automotive industry is undergoing a colossal transformation. We are pivoting hard to electric vehicles on a unprecedented scale, all in an effort to reduce global emissions. This transformation will open up even more applications for leak testing and coatings.

Leak Testing

The automotive industry is arguably the most important industry when it comes to leak testing. Of course there are many different types of leak tests, we’ll focus on high vacuum, mass spectrometer leak testing. High vacuum mass spectrometer leak testing was originally developed for the Manhattan Project. Today most critical automotive parts are leak tested using mass spectrometer type machines. Critcal componets such as air bag ignitors, fuel tanks, radiators and batteries are leak tested, as these componets are not allowed to fail. Mass spectrometer leak testing improves product quality and increases consumer safety.

Coatings

Coatings are used in the automotive industry for both decorative and functional purposes. “Decorative Coatings” are available in a just about every color imaginable. “Decorative Coatings” will conform to the each substrates unique texture and geometry. This is extremely useful for trim details, interior as well as exterior.

Two examples of functional coatings are “Reflective Coatings” which now produce > 95% reflectivity in headlight applications. Then there are “Shield Coatings” which protect the components from wear, corrosion, oxidation, etc. A great example in today’s world is how “Shield Coatings” are used to protect Electric Vechicle batteries from water and humidity.

Both of these coatings impregnate the substrate. These coatings will not chip or crack over time. These coatings will maintain a high level of performance throughout the life of the host part. These coatings are so incredibly thin and do not alter the base material.

Key High Vacuum Products has an installed base of tens of thousands of “Performance Series” valves within the automotive industry.

The Key High Performance Series valves feature “Pulled Port” valve bodies. Our valves are constructed; welded using microprocessor gas tungsten Arc welding equipment. Furthermore the valve bodies are electropolished to enhance corrosion resistance. Electropolishing also reduces the surface area of the valve itself resulting in quicker pumpdown cycles. Key High’s “Performance Series” valves feature a welded stem seal for extended service life and offer high conductance. Other benefits include a compact foot print, saving valuable enclosure space.
